Horseracing, another horse dies at the Cesena racecourse: Carabela was 4 years old

Carabela was only four years old but she had already been turned into a racing machine, deprived of the possibility of living a normal life: 23 races at only three years old, 11 races at only four years old (yielding a total of over 42,000 euros in winnings).

The last one was fatal for her: on Tuesday 28 June, in the sixth race at the Cesena racecourse, she collapsed on the ground 600 metres from the finishing line.

The statement from Hippogroup, the company that manages the racecourse, is laconic: 'Tragic accidents like the one that occurred unfortunately happen, as in all other sports, even to human athletes, despite the thorough veterinary checks that trotters undergo before and after every race”.

If the exploitation of horses in equestrian sports and events involving competitions and exhibitions is already intolerable, in horse-racing this is pushed to the point of bending the nature of horses, whose musculoskeletal development cannot be said to be complete before the age of 4-5 years and who are instead sent to the racetrack at the age of 2 or even earlier.

Like Alleluia LZ, the horse that died last year, also in Cesena, on 28 August: at only 5 years old, he had already competed 116 times.

All this, let us remember, is financed with public money by a State that finds money to maintain the exploitation of horses but then does not give money for the rescue and care of the abused ones, nor is it able to seriously consider a tightening of penalties.
