Merano: further details on the fatal fall of Perfect Gentleman, and what happened afterwards (VIDEO)

(30 September 2015)

Thanks to another spectator at the “LXXVI GRAN PREMIO MERANO” on Sunday 27 September, we now have a more detailed account of what happened in the moments after the fall and subsequent death of Perfect Gentleman. See the images of the fall in this VIDEO.

Mr Antonio Sperati Ruffoni describes what he saw from the Stands.
"After it fell to the ground the horse kicked up into the air several times with its back legs then became absolutely still. It was quite a few minutes, and after the race itself had finished, before anyone even made an attempt to see what state the horse and jockey were in. After a long wait a person carrying a bag, presumably the vet, walked without any hurry, the length of the track to the horse. After this, some vehicles arrived and the body was screened off, and was still there at the end of the Carabinieri carousel, and the end of the show.
The only announcement made was to state that the jockey was unharmed and that therefore everything was OK. No mention at all of the horse. It was obvious they were trying to minimise the incident. I think the vet assistance should have been more urgently present, and that the sacrifice of that poor animal should have been drawn to the public’s attention."

We add one particular: in the official programme of the Gran Premio, under the section ’Participants in the GP’, a phrase referring to Perfect Gentleman, a phrase which now sounds somewhat sinister: "It remains to be seen how he likes the Merano fences".
