Racing - yet another horse dies in a tragic accident

14/10/2015

(14 October 2015)

His name was Spirit Pizz, he was four years old and had been on the tracks since he was three (he had travelled around: Padova, Triests, Bologna, Treviso, Ferrara...).
At an age when a horse’s mental and physical development is still far from complete, he had already run 49 races in little over 12 months, "repaying" his owner Johnny Pizzolato over €11,600. His 50th race was to be his fatal last.

It was the usual repeat tragedy: bad fall, horse destroyed on the spot, organisers hastening to reschedule the race, not bothering to take the time to write a press release, not caring enough to cancel the meeting.
No information on the racecourse boards, not even on the Nordest Ippodromi SpA website.
Three laconic lines on the SNAI website: "DUE TO A FALL THE SCOOP 3 RACE IS POSTPONED TO WEDNESDAY MORNING. ALL BETS IN THE NATIONAL ACCUMULATOR ARE STILL VALID WHILE WIN AND EACH-WAY BETS WILL BE REFUNDED."

Obviously there is no video of the accident. This morning, the news appears only in a headline on the website of the local newspaper Triesteprima.

Even on the discussion forums people are talking only about the next race, the bets and the condition of the jockey. The only voice breaking into this complacency is that of Mr Angelo Boccia, who writes on his Facebook page: "Does the racing world have a heart? This is the question I was asking myself during the 30 minutes following the fall of Mr Roberto Scuoppo and his horse Spirit Pizz, who died brutally as a result of a tragic accident during the Trieste Scoop 3....
After such a tragedy, to read pitiless press releases which merely state that the Scoop has been postponed to the following morning, or that the bets are still valid....But how can you think of the game after such a tragic event?
I am really left speechless...I can only make my appeal to the racing world...Please let us show we are humans with a heart! Tomorrow out of respect and solidarity, THE SCOOP SHOULD NOT BE RUN!"
