Death of two young horses at the Cesena racecourse: it's a long series of deaths IHP writes to the Minister: “Ban races for animals under the age of 5”
18/07/2022 - Banning races at racecourses for horses under the age of 5, compulsory blood sampling for all horses before a race, compulsory and automatic autopsy in the event of death of a horse at the racecourse, obligation to have a reference clinic and two ambulances for each raceday, and arrival of horses in the morning by 10. These are the requests that IHP made today to the Ministry of Agriculture via a formal letter, after yet another death at the Cesena racetrack. The letter was addressed to Senator Francesco Battistoni, Mipaaf undersecretary responsible for horse racing, and to Francesco Saverio Abate, Head of the Horse Racing Department.

05/07/2022 - In the trials that preceded the palio on 2 July, two horses were injured and the vets decided to exclude them from the race as a precaution. Vankook fell on a bend: although he got up, the vets later deemed him unfit to run. The mare Schietta, who was to run for the contrada dell'Istrice, crippled a hind leg and was also excluded from the race. ournalist Guy Chiappaventi explains: 'The jockeys of the palio ride without a saddle, with an ox's backbone in their hands to whip their own horses but also those of others, and their adversaries, paid like rock stars: winning a palio can cost the contrada hundreds of thousands of euro'.

IHP: “The exploitation must end, we demand answers from the Municipality of Florence”
04/07/2022 - IHP President, Sonny Richichi comments: “One year ago we delivered a petition with 35,000 signatures to Florence City Council, requesting a ban on horse-drawn carriages. The indifference must be stopped”. “We continue to see scenes of utter cruelty in the streets of our cities: horses dying from exhaustion under the sun or falling to the ground while pulling a tourist carriage.  The latest episode occurred in the past few days in Florence, where a mare ended up on the ground while pulling a cart in Via Calzaiuoli.  The time has come to make a choice: ignore the suffering of animals or evolve into a civilised society'”, says Sonny Richichi, president of IHP.

Horse-drawn carriages, IHP: “Utter hypocrisy”
27/06/2022 - “The Municipality of Rome issued an ordinance on horses used to pull carriages for tourists in the capital. In addition to the driving bans imposed since 2011, there is an additional ban that starts at 11am until 6pm on days with heat wave levels 2 and 3. But this act actually bypasses the real problem, which is seeing animals out of their natural environment”.
