PALIOS AND TRADITIONAL LOCAL FESTIVALS

The Ministry of Health has updated the Decree concerning ’regulations governing public and private spectacles involving equids’. The news was given out yesterday in a note sent to the relevant authorities and local councils, and to the ENPA, LAV and IHP associations.

While we fully appreciate the efforts of the Ministry on this subject, and its willingness to block potential loopholes, we maintain that the regulation clearly falls short, given that the fatal accidents and the serious injuries just go on happening (the most recent in the province of Grosseto - see article).

We are still waiting for a response to the letter we sent over a month and a half ago, to the relevant individuals at the Ministry of Health and the Ministry for Farming and Forestry Affairs, requesting an urgent meeting to define a general regulation which would cover palios and local festivals which use horses and other equids.
