Foal found at death’s door in the Calvana mountains: now he’s safe!
Return to the list
25/06/2015
(25 June 2015)
Crostino was found on the muddy banks of a small lake in the
Calvana
mountains (the chain of mountains between Prato and Florence). The passer-by who found him alerted the Fire Department and the rescue operation which also involved the State Forestry Corps began.
Once he had been extracted from the mud the foal, who was in critical condition and totally covered in mud, was taken in a the home of our vet Agnese Santi. At his initial check-up he appeared extremely weak and dehydrated, and he was also at risk of blood-poisoning. When he was found
he was approximately two days old
. Of the mother there was no sign, presuming that she had not died following the birth.
Crostino was in need of intensive care
: fluids, plasma and antibiotics, and for the first two weeks it was necessary to bottle-feed him every hour and a half. Thanks to the dedication and the expertise of Doctor Santi, Crostino fortunately is well today:
we have found him a loving family
who will take care of him in the future, with our close assistance.
