they shine in the sun and neigh in the night...

With your help we can save Mirko

Mirko’s story is a particularly moving one and begins many years ago when he was the best friend of a girl who adored him and who really took care of him. Sadly destiny took this young woman in her youth, to the great distress of her family, and finding in him a link to his daughter the young woman’s father willingly took over the care of Mirko, and for 18 years this sweet natured horse lived in a big field enjoying his daily attention.

We got to know about this only a few days ago, when Mirko’s owner contacted us in utter despair: Mirko had been diagnosed with a malignant tumour on his penis and needed urgent surgery and special post-operative care, both of which were beyond the means of this man, who had lost his job a few months previously and was already struggling to keep Mirko.

We verified the whole story and checked out the horse’s condition, discovering that the tumour had started quite some time ago and that there was a very grave risk of infection, so deferring any longer was not an option. The official IHP vet, Dr Agnese Santi, assisted by Dr Stefano Tani, carried out an emergency operation: we thank them for their willingness not only for their professionalism.

While the operation itself was successful, Mirko is still not out of danger, particularly because he is no longer a youngster, being close on 30! He will be transferred to our rescue centre in the next few days to ensure he gets essential post operative care.

IHP does not have sufficient resources to get involved in cases like this, but we found ourselves unable to refuse and leave the horse to a very difficult and painful end.

Even a small donation will help us to help Mirko, every little bit makes a big difference to him!
