Maintenance Work At Filicaja- March 2010

07/04/2010

Dear friends, the last week of March saw us busy doing maintenance work on the fences and building new hay accumulators for the horses.
The fences have been checked very closely. In some cases it has been necessary to replace some poles; in others we had to move long sections of the fencing.
This will allow us to move horses more easily from a paddock to another when the fields need to be rested to allow grass to grow back. It will also be useful to keep the horses in a safer environment.
We also repaired some hay accumulators and built some new ones for the paddocks that didn’t have them. This will help to avoid the waste of hay that happens when the hay bale is put straight on the ground. Finally we solved some minor problems with the drinking troughs.
These works, realized in an area of about one hundred hectares, have required almost a week and some expenses. We have almost exclusively used recycled materials, borrowed tools and volunteers’ hands. Even so, some expenses were inevitable: we spent about 84,00 Euros in hardware (screws, nuts, etc.) and about 200,00 Euros for paid workers.
Luckily, as you can see in the photos, the horses too tried to help us! In their behalf, we ask you to support us by sending a contribute to cover these expenses and those we face every day to make our centre go on (hay, feeds, drugs, hospitality for volunteers, fuel...) and start new initiatives (legal expenses, production of informative pamphlets and the like, investigation of abuse charges...). We support ourselves only thanks to private people’s contribution, and even a small donation is very important for us. IE, 20,00 Euros can cover the cost of an antibiotic treatment or a dose of dewormer for a pony or seven doses of anti-inflammatory...
