The production of horse meat in Canada, Uruguay, Argentina and Australia (which is also imported into Italy) is a long chain of cruel treatment and gross suffering inflicted on the horses which, apart from anything else, come from very dubious sources (stolen, racetrack rejects).
These images, recorded in Australia, are the result of years of investigation. Many of the horses that end up in slaughterhouses have been rejected by horse racing. There are poor controls on the origin of the animals, mistreatment at various stages of transport, and slaughter often involving excruciating suffering. And yet we go on importing this meat into Europe, and above all into Italy, as if everything was just fine.
In order to put a stop to all this, an international network of Associations from several countries (IHP for Italy) has launched a PETITION to be presented to the EUROPEAN COMMISSION
Undercover investigations have revealed that the horses are systematically very cruelly mistreated. Those seriously wounded, or sick, receive no veterinary care or euthanasia. Horses which collapse during transport are merely pulled off the lorries with chains, and just left there to die. In the Canadian studs, newborn foals are thrown out into the elements and left to die of extreme heat or cold. Breeders, dealers and slaughterhouse staff are given a tip-off when an inspection is due, and obviously they manage to hide any evidence of wrongdoing in good time.

IHP is the Italian partner of an international network of associations working to stop the import of horsemeat into Europe and the production of drugs derived from the exploitation of pregnant mares. Through scientific and legislative investigations and research, we try to put pressure on the European Commission to take serious and urgent action.
