Jane Goodall supports 8hours campaign

Ethologist and anthropologist Jane Goodall has decided to support the 8hours campaign, to put a maximum limit on the transport of live animals sent to slaughter.
The researcher, known for her studies about the chimpanzees’ social and family life, and founder of the Jane Goodall Institute for the study and protection of primates in several areas of the world, has made a video plea to support this European initiative.

The German association “Animals’ Angels”, after documenting for years the abuses suffered by animals during their “journeys of death”, has started a petition along with Danish MEP Dan Jørgensen. The initiative gathered the support of many other European and extra-European associations. Italian Horse Protection is, of course, among them.

The goal is to collect one million signatures, and use them to pressure the European Commission to change the Regulation about the protection of animals during transportation.

The current EU legislation allows the animals’ transportation for several days, and it causes serious problems. As long as the trucks have adequate ventilation, water, navigation system etc., they can transport animals for an indefinite number of cycles made by 24 hours of travel and 24 hours of rest, repeated as many times as necessary to reach the slaughterhouse. With the petition, it is asked the transport of these animals doesn’t last more than 8 hours.

IHP is against the slaughtering of horses and every other animal species and promote vegetarianism. However, the limitation of the transportation of slaughter-bound animals represents an important step in limitation of their suffering.
