Volterra, the tragedy continues

25/10/2019

What is happening at the Rescue Center is a tragedy that we wouldn’t wish upon anyone, not even on those who are relying on this tragedy in an attempt to discredit our work or in the hope of seeing us fail.
To see the horses die after our hard work and courage in rescuing them, and to which we are providing the best possible life, is heartbreaking for all the volunteers.
But we can’t afford to give up. We are doing everything humanly possible and more to defend ourselves from a faceless enemy. For months now, we have continuously sought to find out who is to blame, but nobody has been able to give us a clear answer. We have been accused of criticising the vets who are working on the case, but the reality is completely different: we are not questioning the work of the professionals, but rather, we are pointing the finger at Italy’s the lack of effective operational protocols that would allow prompt intervention when a horse dies in suspicious circumstances. This is what we are asking, not only in the interest of the horses at the Center, but also of all owners who could find themselves in a similar situation. In the absence of an emergency protocol, the chances for doctors to discover the cause of death are diminished. We know that the medical profession has its limits, and this is why we need to be able to intervene quickly to increase the chances of success.

After a period of calm, unfortunately illusory, we have re-activated a crisis management for the horses and we can only hope that it will be sufficient, at least for now, though we know it cannot last for long. The association is at risk of collapse, whatever decision we make, always in the best interest of the horses. More than ever before we need to know that we are not alone. Thank you for your support.
