Puglia: horses seized moved from Manduria

Corte dei Vescovi ill-treatment
THE HORSES SEIZED HAVE BEEN MOVED FROM MANDURIA
IHP: very difficult and expensive rescue

The three horses and the two ponies seized for ill-treatment at the Corte dei Vescovi riding school in Manduria (TA) were taken to a safe place yesterday, to receive appropriate treatment and recover their strength. Following the action taken by the State Police, on 4 October the custody of the five horses was handed over to IHP, though it has been possible to move them from the premises only now. On 13 September Nerone, a Murgese horse, died here. Since he was in serious health conditions, the non-profit organization requested urgent action by the authorities, but the inaction of the local authorities had fatal consequences.

For the other five horses a new chapter is beginning thanks to the efforts of the NPO:"We accepted the custody and waived reimbursement of the expenses by the Public Prosecutor’s Office as this was the only way to free the horses as soon as possible. Though we know that we are putting at risk the financial stability of the association, we had no intention to abandon them or to leave them in those paddocks," said Sonny Richichi, President of the NPO. The extra costs to maintain the horses and ensure proper veterinary treatments will be around 1,000 Euros per month, excluding unforeseen circumstances, and will have a material impact on the financial statements of the association that is launching a fundraising programme: “Now that the horses of Manduria are safe, we trust in the interest of all those who will become actively involved to give these animals a better future and provide justice to Nerone and to his fellow sufferers.”

The battle is continuing in court where individual liabilities for the facts reported by IHP will be clearly established. The lawyer Francesco Di Lauro will continue to follow the case. His contribution is all the more important because he decided to do it for free, with a selfless act and great concern for animal rights, which can set a good example for others who wish to support the good cause promoted by IHP.
