The palio of 2 July 2019 in five points

04/07/2019

In summary, with regard to the Palio that loves and protects horses:

1. AN ACCIDENT - Among the comments of 2nd July 2019 we read that Violenta da Clodia, a horse “worn-out” by the race, suffered an injury, a “broken nail” (more precisely a hoof crack) prior to departure, caused by a kick: the Captain of the Contrada della Chiocciola is “sorry” (Radio Siena TV). He’s sorry because the horse was about to win.

2. A FALL - Renalzos, the horse of the Contrada dell’Aquila, and his jockey Brigante, fell “badly” (Siena Free) on the last lap: Lorenzini, the Captain of the Contrada dell’Aquila, runs to see and make sure the jockey “didn’t get hurt” (Radio Siena TV). Nobody speaks of the horse’s health.

3. TWO HORSES FOR SLAUGHTER - Two of the ten horses lined up near the rope, known as "canapo", have been registered as food producing animals, which means that they can be legally slaughtered, where necessary. One of these two horses is Renalzos (Aquila); the other one is Rocco Nice (Torre). (Equidae database). Here today, gone tomorrow...

4. A HORSE STRUCK MULTIPLE TIMES ON THE HEAD - The Palio regulations allow to whip horses with a “nerbo” during the race. That means “whipping the horse to incite him or even knocking a jockey off his steed and whipping a rival’s horse” is allowed. The horses that run the Palio know this very well. In particular, Tale e Quale, the horse with which the Contrada la Giraffa won, must have noticed it as he was struck on the head for at least four times by the jockey of Chiocciola just a few meters from the arrival.

5. A JOCKEY THAT HAS BEEN CONVICTED ON FIRST INSTANCE - Also Trecciolino took part in the Palio by running for Pantera, and “met his aim” of hindering Aquila, their fierce rival, as they approached the “mossa” (the start) and of knocking both the jockey and the horse while overtaking. Trecciolino is Luigi Bruschelli, convicted on first instance a couple of weeks ago for falsehood (in 2015 he counterfeited the documents of two thoroughbred horses to make them eligible for selection for the Palio horse race). The Municipality of Siena, which intervened as a party in the judicial trial and to which Bruschelli was ordered to pay damages following the first instance conviction (ANSA), did not consider it necessary to deny his participation to the palio. This should be kept in mind.
