Emergency in the province of Asti (Piedmont, Italy)!!!

07/08/2010

(August 7th, 2010)
Emergency in the Asti province where numerous animals, some equines among them, haven’t been fed in days. IHP is working to help them, but they need food and funds at once: two equines died, and the others are in bad condition.

IHP (Italian Horse Protection Association) has acknowledged the desperate appeal of an association based in the Asti province that is without funds, with many animals at the end of their strength. In particular, the equines haven’t received any hay in weeks, and now they have exhausted the pasture grass too.

IHP received the appeal only a week ago. We sent a volunteer on location, who ascertained the situation is terribly serious and took these pictures.

We immediately urged the Heath Minister’s task force for the animal welfare to take action. Yesterday they sent a veterinary to check the animals, and today the ASL (the local health authorities) ordered the sequestration of the estate.

We have bought at our expense 48 quintals of hay and had it delivered to them; it will feed the equines for a few days. Unfortunately, it was already too late for two of them: a pony and a horse, who had been lying down for two days, perhaps because of their weakness, didn’t recover and the vet had to euthanize them.

The list of the animals is long, and the conditions of the equines are especially worrying: a blind, 36-year-old female mule; a donkey female with troubles to her joints; a male donkey with cancer to the testicles; a 25-year-old mare with serious problems to her muscular system; a pony mare blind to one eye and almost blind to the other; two Haflingers with serious behavioral problems; a Thoroughbred retired from the races because of a broken knee; a pony stallion; a Quarter Horse; 5 female donkeys; 18 German Shepherds; 7 cats; 3 very old sheep; 4 mini she-goats; a boar; numerous chickens.

In these hours we are waiting to know if there will be judicial repercussions in this sad tale.

In the meantime, however, the animals need to be fed and cared for: IHP hasn’t the necessary resources, and the load of hay we sent is already beyond our possibilities. So we have launched a collection of funds destined to buy hay and grains and to pay some urgent veterinary cures. As it happened with the first load of hay, we’ll document every expense and report to our supporters how the funds were utilized. We’ll also update them about the evolution of the situation.

This is how you can send money to IHP Italian Horse Protection association (Cause: “Emergency Asti – equines”):

In consideration of the animals’ sequestration, no contribution in money will be sent to their actual owners/caretakers.

We invite those wishing to directly send hay and feeds to the estate, to contact us, so to coordinate our efforts and avoid useless and costly inefficiencies or, worse, waste of resources.
