Luna and Stella paddock: work in progress

25/05/2016

(25 May 2015)

Work for the construction of the paddock for Luna and Stella is in progress. We would like to reiterate that construction of this paddock had been taken up to allow Luna, who currently has serious problems in her rear legs, and is inseparable from Stella (who is blind and Luna is her horse-guide) stay together outdoors and not as inmates in the infirmary for most of the days.

The idea is to create a paddock with a flat surface with drains in order to avoid the water stagnation, and also to avoid the risk of Luna slipping. We have identified a place in the paddock for the elderly, so that they could be in contact with their old friends. It was decided to have this as an area near the stables, which is not far away from the infirmary. That way, if need arises, the mares can be quickly bought back to the infirmary. In addition, it is an area populated by trees that provide shade and cool during the hot summer season.

We proceeded to flatten the ground so as to create a flat surface. On this surface, we layered it with about 20 cms of gravel and over it about 3 cms of sand. This design would give it a good drainage. Above this layer, we placed a 4 cms high plastic grid, coated with sand. The end result is a paddock with a stable and good draining surface.

The next step will be construction of a shelter about 3 by 5 meters, for the mares. The shelter will also be equipped with a drainage layer of 25 cms formed by gravel and sand but, in place of the grids, we will layer it with 4 cms thick rubber panels that are specially designed for the realization of the floors for horse’s shed.

If you would like to contribute towards completion of the structure, we shall be immensely grateful. Every donation is welcome, CLICK HERE.

Thank you.
