...my treasures do not sparkle they clink,
they shine in the sun and neigh in the night...

Grifo

Grifo is a pony and the mascot of the rescue centre: his story is truly unique and special. In 2018 we carried out a large seizure for mistreatment in Rome: dozens of horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. Among them were many pregnant females and one of them, whom we later named Azzurra, gave birth to this little one who was born with a very serious eye problem: a fungal and bacterial keratitis. When mother and child were taken to the clinic, all possible treatments were tried but to no avail: the little one was blind. The vets were even considering euthanasia when we decided to move him in with his mother. We had already taken care of horses that had gone blind, but never one that was blind from birth. The first few weeks were difficult because we needed to understand how to avoid danger without forcing him into a life of confinement. Then, little by little, it was Grifo who amazed us day by day: not only had he learnt to orient himself thanks to his mother, but he also established a bond with the other horses and especially with Nina. Over the years he developed his other senses so well that he is able to move around the paddock independently. Grifo has something special, which can only be perceived by getting to know him closely.
