In this way the horses can be adopted at once while remaining under IHP’s tutelage and, above all, they won’t be put back in the racing circuit. This is great victory, for in this way, the long times needed for a confiscation have been avoided, not to mention the risks of seeing the horses sold to the highest bidder.

However, we are concerned this won’t remain an isolated event: for the past months the UNIRE (the national organization that manages the racing world in Italy) has been struggling against increasingly harder financial problems, due to the decreased revenue from betting on horse-racing. On one hand, this could be proof of an increased sensibility toward horses, seen more as pets than animals exploited for commercial use; on the other hand, these problems could have negative consequences for the horses, as it can be easily guessed.

For us, the management of these 21 horses, atop of the 49 equines we already had before their sequestration, will be especially difficult and expensive, considering the current resources of our association.
However, we have weighted all the pros and cons of this situation, and in the end we have decided to accept the risk in return of guaranteeing a good future to theses horses.

Also, we would like to find a new family for these friends. The sooner, the better. IHP will give these horses on definitive adoption, as long as certain requirements regarding the animals’ wellbeing are respected, as coherent with our philosophy.
