Death of Kregou Becourt: FISE archives our disclosures. The list of dead horses

26/03/2015

(26 March 2015)

Following the death of Kregou Becourt, who crashed to the ground and died during a jumping competition at San Giovanni in Marignano (RN), our Association requested copies of the medical notes and also requested that both FEI and FISE launch an investigation, considering that two years previously, in July 2012, a mare, Arielle Z, died in very similar circumstances.
The mare was being ridden by the same rider as Kregou Becourt and had the same trainer. For this reason we asked that any potential link between the two episodes be investigated, such as events or behaviours which could have led to the deaths of the two horses.

After many months the FISE replied, declaring that the autopsy report showed up no anomalies and that the behaviour of the rider “does not show any aspect of irregular disciplinary actions”. Consequently the Provisional federal president has ordered the closing of the matter.

No reply at all, however, from the FEI, under whose banner the San Giovanni in Marignano competition was organised.

There have been many deaths of competition horses in equestrian sports in recent years (see the list below, just of those reported in the press): is it a case of simple fatalities or should we be looking at the intensive training and unnatural lives these animals are subjected to, being forced to become ’athletes’ when, given a real choice, they would choose to live quietly at grass?

Here are some of the horses who have died in equestrian sporting events over the past few years:
