Blonde, tousled mane, forelock shaved off, tail a tangle of leaves and twigs….and part of a hind leg completely missing. This is Carolina when Maura finds her in a field in Terni province, in December.
The owner, a farmer, tells Maura that in September the pony had got caught in a poacher’s wild-boar trap. All that night and part of the following day, struggling to free herself, she had pulled off the hoof, the tarsal, and the metatarsal of the trapped leg. The pain must have been unimaginable, the terror dreadful, and the weeks which followed agonising, the injury untended.

With considerable difficulty Maura managed to persuade the farmer to give her the mare, and immediately took her to the Perugia veterinary clinic, Director Prof Marco Pepe, where the shattered limb was amputated and a prosthesis constructed, which today allows Carolina to walk and even to trot a little.
The costs of the operation and the subsequent therapies, plus the general care of the pony, are particularly onerous, not least because Maura has not stinted in her rescue of the little mare – in spite of her own grave financial situation. For this reason we have decided to launch a special fundraising to help her.

Carolina is lively and playful in her small paddock – small because she needs to adapt perfectly still to her new leg. Her forelock has grown out again and she looks always for Maura coming with treats of apples and carrots. She is fine with other animals and her prosthesis has been adapted and modified to perfection, Maura just has to ensure Carolina does not put on too much weight: WATCH THE VIDEO

Maura writes “I lived this experience as a moral duty above all, and with the conviction that within any suffering animal there is a soul pleading for help. The language of their eyes bears witness to their silent agony…”.
