Colleferro sequestration, the images no one showed and the associations’ commitment

12/03/2013

(2013, March 12th)

Journal from Colleferro- there are still many equines to be sequestrated. In the meantime, the happy end for the two fillies admitted to Perugia clinic.

One and half month after its start, the operation is still far from its conclusion.

So far, 104 equines have been sequestrated; of these, 7 died right after the rescue (2 foals, 1 mare, and 4 donkeys, 2 of them weanlings).

There are at least 70 more animals to be sequestrated and saved. The operations proceed slowly, mostly because the lack of adequate resources to face one of the greatest horse sequestration ever happened in Italy.

The Corpo Forestale dello Stato (forestry police) has adopted a few horses, the State Police guaranteed many transportations, some pharma industries donated part of the medicines, the Health Ministry and the Carabinieri coordinate the interventions and decide the entrustments. But neither the Prosecutor’s Office nor the Institutions allocated funds, while the municipalities of the area, jointly liable of this mistreatment, are absent.

In fact, IHP, ENPA and Rifugio degli Asinelli are the ones covering for the sequestration expenses, thanks to the many donations that have so far allowed to pay for food, veterinarians, clinic admittances and other costs. The associations are even obliged to pay for the compensation of the judiciary custodian, which should be paid by the Prosecutor’s Office. The funds risk being insufficient.

Several times IHP and the Rifugio degli Asinelli have sent – at their own expenses – volunteers and veterinarians on location to care for the most serious cases, separate the groups and study therapy protocols.

The Rifugio has also taken in custody 21 donkeys, while IHP took 2 foals, all of them moved in their respective rescue centers.

We have asked to the Prosecutor’s Office to be involved in the choice of the adoptions, but so far, inexplicably, without any result. For the moment we just received the verbal promise to be able to make post-entrusting checks.

In this video we tell what happened so far (Warning: some images could hurt your sensitivity).

In the meantime we are happy to be able to tell you about the arrival at our rescue centre of the two fillies, now named Costanza and Sandra, survivors of this hell and originally admitted to the University of Perugia clinic. Watch their story in this video.

The Colleferro emergency is far from finished and a lot of animals still need our help: please keep on supporting us.
