A large-scale operation by the State Police in Catania has led to the seizure of 13 horses being kept in unauthorised stables and to charges being brought against seven people for animal cruelty, inappropriate housing and possession of banned performance-enhancing drugs.
The raid, codenamed ‘Zoccolo duro’, targeted 19 illegal facilities in the San Cristoforo, Librino, San Giovanni Galermo and Picanello neighbourhoods.
The operation revealed appalling hygiene conditions and a network involving drugs used for illegal horse racing, confirming that this is a systematic problem in Sicily.
IHP President Sonny Richichi said: “We commend the police and the judiciary in Catania, who are waging a relentless and difficult battle in the absence of laws strong enough to deter the phenomenon of illegal horse racing and illegal slaughter.”
IHP reiterates the need for tougher penalties to effectively combat organised crime.
