The production of horse meat in Canada, Uruguay, Argentina and Australia (which is also imported into Italy) is a long chain of cruel treatment and gross suffering inflicted on the horses –which, apart from anything else, come from very dubious sources (stolen, racetrack rejects).

These images, recorded in Canada, are the result of years of investigation, and show clearly what EU inspectors simply do not wish to see: these systems of breeding, dealership, transport and slaughter show no respect whatsoever for the EU’s own requirements.

And yet we go on importing this meat into Europe, and above all into Italy, as if everything was just fine.

In order to put a stop to all this, an international network of Associations from several countries (IHP for Italy) has launched a PETITION to be presented to the EUROPEAN COMMISSION

Undercover investigations have revealed that the horses are systematically very cruelly mistreated. Those seriously wounded, or sick, receive no veterinary care or euthanasia. Horses which collapse during transport are merely pulled off the lorries with chains, and just left there to die. In the Canadian studs, newborn foals are thrown out into the elements and left to die of extreme heat or cold. Breeders, dealers and slaughterhouse staff are given a tip-off when an inspection is due, and obviously then manage to hide any evidence of wrongdoing in good time.
