Palio of Casole d’Elsa (Siena): a horse dies during the qualifications

07/07/2018

The Municipal Administration of Casole d’Elsa, a town about 40 km from Siena, has decided to cancel the palio (folkloristic horse race) scheduled for tomorrow, following the death of the horse Savage for a serious accident during the qualifications.

The decision to cancel the race is a sign of great embarrassment. In fact, after declaring that Savage was victim "of a serious accident", the same Municipality (later, answering to a comment on its Facebook page) writes that the horse died "for natural causes". But, in the same post, they say that they must modernize the track.

We will write a report to the Ministry of Health and to the Prosecutor’s Office, asking to verify the respect of the current laws regarding the safety and the horse welfare. We will ask to ascertain any responsibility for the umpteenth death of a horse for public entertainment.

In this photo, taken from Valdelsa.net during a previous edition of the palio, it’s evident the irregular track and the improvised "protection" barriers made with a shading cloth
